DTH operators smell blood in cable digitization move
If cable operators thought they would have a smooth transition from analog-digital services to digital-only services by June 30, satellite-based DTH operators seem to have other ideas. According to the rules, cable operators must switch off the analog signals on their lines in big cities by June 30. Once the analog service is switched off, people who are watching cable TV without any set-top-boxes will essentially be left in the dark. They will have to spend about Rs 1,000 to buy a set-top-box to convert digital signals back into analog, before they can see their favorite soaps or movies again. The »»»
India has 44.2 mn DTH subs, 825 channels: Trai
MUMBAI: India has 44.21 million private DTH subscribers as of 31 December 2011, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said in its quarterly report. The total number of registered subscribers is from the six private direct-to-home operators – Dish TV, Tata Sky, Airtel Digital TV, Videocon D2H, Reliance Digital TV and Sun Direct. Digital cable TV, however, is growing slowly in the Cas (conditional access system) notified areas. Cable TV operators have marginally increased the seeding of set-top boxes (STBs) in the Cas areas of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai during this period. According »»»
DTH and digital cable will co-exist
Most viewers seem to be preferring direct-to-home (DTH) to view television. However, cable (digital) will still be an important broadcast mode. This observation has been made by a FICCI-KPMG report on media and entertainment. The number of DTH households in the country is set to go up from 37 million in 2011 to 86 million by 2016. Digital cable, on the other hand, would see its subscriber base explode from 6 million to 75 million over the same period. Not surprisingly, analog cable, which connects most households currently, would shrink from 68 million in 2011 to just 4 million by 2016. A major »»»
Cable operators distort signals using jammers, DTH companies cry foul
New Delhi: Rivalry between cable operators and DTH companies has come to the fore with growing instances of DTH jammers being used in parts of Mumbai and Delhi NCR to distort DTH signals. DTH firms like Tata Sky, Dish TV, Reliance Big TV, Videocon D2H and Airtel Digital TV have detected fresh cases of DTH jammers causing disruption of services in Mumbai. The DTH Operators Association of India (DOAOI), which represents all DTH companies, has described the use of jammers as a threat to the national spectrum. In a strong worded letter sent to the department of telecommunications (DoT), Mumbai Police, »»»
Indian DTH players focus on market share as digitisation approaches
Kolkata, March 19: As the June 30 deadline for digitisation in the four metros approaches, DTH players like Dish TV and Tata Sky are going into overdrive. If Tata Sky is going for value additions to grab a larger slice of the Rs 22,500-cable sector market (analogue +digital), then Dish TV has begun fishing in multiple service operators’ territory. Dish TV, which already has 12.5 million subscribers, will now partner the cable operators to gain a foothold in localities that were designated to them during the analogue days. The local operator will sell connections (DTH) and also be responsible »»»
Are You Still Watching TV On Analog Cable?
Friday, March 02, 2012: The recent amendment to Section 4A of the Cable Regulation Act, 1995, legalizes an ordinance issued in October this year for implementing mandatory addressable digitization (MAD) throughout the country in phases starting June 30, 2012. The bill mandates complete digitization in the four metros of Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai by June 30, 2012. Digitization means that there will not be any analog signals as these signals will be switched off after the cut off date. The local cable operator will not be able to beam any analog signals. The TV will be completely blacked »»»
Budget 2012: Reduce tax burden on DTH industry, says Dish TV
NEW DELHI: Dish TV said it is looking for positive steps from the government to reduce the heavy taxation on Direct to Home industry as the service providers are paying multiple taxes such as service tax , entertainment tax , license fee and value added tax. The company has urged the government to provide some relief in license fee by reducing it from the current 10% to 6% as earlier recommended by Trai. Salil Kapoor COO Dish TV said, “The double charge of service tax and entertainment tax should be subsumed in Good and Service Tax.” The company also said that the government should »»»
