Entertainment duty on DTH gets Assembly clearance
The Congress today accused the ruling alliance of trying to further monopolise the cable television network in the state by imposing additional tax on direct-to-home (DTH) services. Urging the state government to reconsider the Bill that would make DTH costlier by levy of entertainment duty, Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira said imposition of the tax on DTH will curb the freedom of expression.

Airtel Digital TV offers discount to HDFC card holders
MUMBAI: Airtel Digital TV, the direct-to-home (DTH) arm of Bharti Airtel, has announced partnership with HDFC bank to offer discount to all HDFC credit card holders. As part of the new offer, all HDFC credit card customers buying an Airtel DTH connection online would be entitled to a 15 per cent discount. The offer is valid till 31 March 2010.

DTH operators oppose suggestion to offer channels at a-la-carte rates
Prominent Direct-To-Home operators on Monday opposed any suggestion to offer television channels on their platform at a-la-carte rates. Responding to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s supplementary consultation paper on tariff related issues, DTH operators have opposed the suggestion of offering TV channels on their platform at a-la-carte rates as against the current system of offering them in various packages or bouquets.

Exempt set-top boxes from 5% customs duty: Assocham
NEW DELHI: Industry body Assocham has urged Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to withdraw the 5 per cent customs duty on set-top boxes (STBs) in the forthcoming Budget to encourage digitisation in the broadcasting sector. “This is aimed at providing support to the direct-to-home (DTH) industry and advance objectives of digitisation,” the chamber said in a pre-Budget memorandum.
