New tools for kids to beat examinations

BANGALORE: This is the digital age and a fair number of youngsters live, talk, breathe and study in digital formats. This behavioural change has attached prominence to E-learning all over the world and Bangalore is no exception. E-learning has evolved as a new tool to beat the exams and keep yourself one step ahead of your fellow students. City Express takes a look into a variety of tools available in the market to deal with examinations.

One of the most talked about tool introduced recently by Airtel Digital TV, the DTH service by Bharti Airtel, is the launch of iExam — An interactive service designed for students taking competitive examinations. This service enables them to prepare for the competitive exams from their home by offering mock and practice tests directly on their Airtel Digital TV. A similar service is also offered by Tatas where it provides content across popular direct to home (DTH) platforms such as Tata Sky with interactive learning units including quiz on maths and science to improve a child’s general knowledge.

Another tool introduced by them is ‘active learning’ aimed at children in the age group of 7-12 years. It uses interactive quizzes on science, mathematics and general knowledge to enhance children’s knowledge as well as prepare them for competitive examinations. The questions are based on the syllabus of classes 1-5 in ICSC / IGCSC / CBSE and other state board schools. However, the most important and well known tool among the students is the ‘active topper’, an interactive service that provides you with revision tests and key learning for chapters taught in maths and science in classes 9-12.

Another platform in E-learning that has been adopted by many institutions is Educomp. It provides smartclass or one can say an initiative in the space of digital classroom content. It is a fully integrated one-switch digital interactive teaching system and broadens the choice of teaching tools to bring abstract concepts to life for students.

When City Express contacted a few students in the city on their take on E-learning tools, positive reactions came across. Sujith Appaya, a Bcom final-year student at Christ College said, “I feel E-learning has come up as a very useful tool. I can get the benefits which I don’t get in classroom teaching. There is instant reply to your queries too and hence, you can always get your doubts cleared as and when you encounter them while learning.”

Another student Sagayaraj, said, “The only problem with digital learning is lack of awareness. Students get detailed materials of their subject in one go, which is not possible in a limited hour of classroom teaching.”

Beena Sunil, an Educational Coordinator at Sri Sri Centre for Media Studies, said, “Now-a-days the trend has changed and students like to make use of things which are easily available. This has highlighted the scope of E-learning very much. Besides, teaching has become more practical than theoretical and our students have been making extensive use of E-learning tools. We encourage them wholeheartedly as well.”

Apart from these tools, there are various applications that are doing the rounds in the market and are quite helpful for students preparing for any exams. Many students make use of Android and iPad apps to prepare for exams such as GRE and TOFEL Even others can use these tools.
