India has 44.2 mn DTH subs, 825 channels: Trai
MUMBAI: India has 44.21 million private DTH subscribers as of 31 December 2011, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said in its quarterly report. The total number of registered subscribers is from the six private direct-to-home operators – Dish TV, Tata Sky, Airtel Digital TV, Videocon D2H, Reliance Digital TV and Sun Direct. Digital cable TV, however, is growing slowly in the Cas (conditional access system) notified areas. TDSAT directs ESPN to sign new channel pact with Dish TV
NEW DELHI: Broadcast tribunal TDSAT has directed ESPN to enter into a new a commercial agreement with Dish TV based on RIO that specifies terms for DTH operators to get signals from broadcasters. “The petition of Dish TV is allowed. The parties are directed to enter into an agreement with effect from September 1, 2011 which would be governed by the modified RIO,” said a TDSAT bench headed by its Chairman Justice S B Sinha. Govt & Trai should act on time if digitisation deadline is to be met: Stakeholders
NEW DELHI: Participants at a one-day meet to discuss the march towards digitisation agreed that there would be no difficulty in meeting the deadlines if the government and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) complete their tasks in time. No relaxation in sunset date for first phase of digitisation: Govt
NEW DELHI: Information and Broadcasting Secretary Uday Kumar Varma, while reiterating that the sunset dates of the first phase for the metros of 30 June was irrevocable, said today that the regulatory framework including interconnection issues and tariff for cable digitisation would be in place by the end of this month. Varma said that one million digital set top boxes had already been installed while another 2.5 million were readily available and the process of acquiring the remaining seven million required for the first phase had been put in place with directions issued for importing them. New cable regime to signal end of operator arrogance in Delhi
Come July and you will be able to register your complaint with the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) in your area in case the cable operator decides to pull the plug on that cricket match or the Saas-Bahu serial. By the end of June, the Delhi government intends to digitize the city’s cable network. When that happens, the cable operators will not only be under obligation to provide the channels chosen by the consumer, but failure to do so might get their licences revoked. Tata Sky gearing up to meet demand post-digitisation
Direct-to-Home (DTH) broadcaster Tata Sky is gearing up to meet the demand for new connections that would come up from the four metros following digitisation of cable TV networks from July 1. Households in the four metros – Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata – will have to switch to digital TV before June 30 as the Information and Broadcasting Ministry has mandated nationwide cable digitisation as recommended by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
