Bangalore, 23 November 2010: For the first time in 55 years radio waves fell silent across the State with the All India Radio going off air on Tuesday, when all the employees of AIR went on a strike seeking a repeal of the Prasar Bharathi Act, 1990. As many as five radio channels, Akashvani Bangalore, Direct-to-Home (DTH), Vividh Bharathi and Amruthavarshini, a musical channel went off the air from 9 am. Govt finalising FM phase III policy soon: Soni

NEW DELHI: The government is in the process of finalising the FM Radio Phase III policy soon, according to Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni. “This was being done to further liberalise the regulatory framework to provide for greater diversity of content and bring down operational costs. It will also incentivise the introduction of FM radio services in the North Eastern States, Jammu and Kashmir and island territories,” Soni said. Airtel DTH is all set to replace WorldSpace services from its platform with 10 radio channels of All India Radio. AIR grows in coverage

NEW DELHI: All India Radio covers 24.55 per cent area of the country with a presence in 172 places through FM broadcasting. Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting S Jagathrakshakan told Parliament that while a total of 251 private FM channels were broadcasting in 26 states and union territories in the country, no study had been carried out about the area they covered. The government had approved schemes for installing AIR FM transmitters at 195 more places during the tenth plan.
