Airtel Digital TV Q3 net loss widens 10% to Rs 1.96 bn
MUMBAI: Airtel Digital TV’s net loss widened in the fiscal third quarter but subscriber additions stayed competitively strong in a slowing environment. The DTH arm of telecom major Bharti Airtel posted a net loss of Rs 1.96 billion for the quarter ended December compared to Rs 1.8 billion in the trailing quarter. The net loss in the third quarter of the previous fiscal was Rs 1.2 billion, while the total loss from Airtel’s DTH business for the financial year ended March 2011 stood at Rs 5.18 billion on a revenue of Rs 7.7 billion. Airtel Digital TV adds Star Cricket HD and ESPN HD
Airtel Digital TV, the DTH service from Bharti Airtel, had added ‘ESPN HD’ and ‘Star Cricket HD’ to its Real HD portfolio. With this Airtel digital TV has augmented its Real HD channel count to 14 – the highest in India and total channel count to 275 that include 242 Standard Definition (SD) channels and 14 High Definition (HD) channels. DTH industry showing signs of churn
India’s competitive DTH industry is moving towards more customised offerings such as video-on-demand, Catch UP TV and cheaper channel packs in regional languages. Indian DTH subscriber base crosses 41 Million
NEW DELHI: Pay direct-to-home (DTH) television platforms have a registered subscriber base of 41,044,463 as in September this year, showing a steady increase over the past four years. The registered subscriber base for pay DTH was 11,104,997 in December 2008, 19,148,848 in December 2009 and 32,054,073 in December 2010. There is no record of subscribers to the free-to-air Doordarshan’s DTH platform DD Direct Plus since it entails a one-time expenditure of purchase of dish antennae and there is no subscription base.
