TRAI move on STB interoperability receives mixed response

New Delhi, Sep 15 : After mobile number portability, the telecom and broadcast regulator’s move to bring interopertability to Set Top Boxes (STB) has evoked a mixed response from the Direct-to-Home (DTH) operators. STB interopertability means the STBs of any DTH platform should be usable on any other DTH platform. It will enable customers to switch from one operator to another on the same set top box by just using a module known as conditional access module (CAM). Come September and subscribers of DTH services would be able to pick and choose the channels they want to watch but have to pay a minimum of Rs 150 per month for a bouquet of channels of their choice. In its tariff order for 2010, broadcast regulator TRAI also included provisions to protect the consumers from rise in rates, like no increase in subscription charges in the first six months of enrolling. Chhattisgarh slaps entertainment tax on DTH connection

Raipur, July 22: The Chhattisgarh government has imposed entertainment tax ranging from Rs.10 to Rs.20 per Direct-to-Home (DTH) connection, effective retrospectively from the month of June. The commercial taxes department Thursday said dealers of companies providing DTH services in the state will collect the tax. India likely to surpass US in terms of DTH subscriber base

MUMBAI: Strong growth of the domestic direct-to-home (DTH) broadcast market may soon catapult India into the No. 1 position globally in terms of the largest DTH subscriber base, ahead of the US, an industry official said.
