Consolidation in the Indian DTH market is inevitable, perhaps within months, according to Tata Sky Managing Director, Harit Nagpal. Tata Sky has requested Isro controlled Antrix Corporation for permission to hire a spare satellite from an overseas provider, in the same orbital slot as the Insat 4A satellite it uses to beam signals to subscribers. The move follows the inability of the DTH firm, which is a three-way joint venture with Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, Singapore government controlled Temasek and the $67.4 billion Tata group to get insurance against the risk of satellite failure and attendant loss of profits. Tata Sky Partners With Ryz Media Inc For ‘Tata Sky Mobile Access’ App

Tata Sky, a direct-to-home (DTH) service provider, has launched ‘Tata Sky Mobile Access’, an app for Apple devices (iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad), in partnership with Ryz Media Inc. The app will enable Tata Sky subscribers to convert their Apple devices into a universal remote control for their Tata Sky Set-Top box, TV, DVD and amplifier. An additional orb-shaped MP3 mobile accessory needs to be attached to the 3.5 mm headphone jack of the device in order to convert it. India’s third-largest direct-to-home (DTH) operator Tata Sky is in the final stages of negotiations to launch a Netflix-like service in India. US -based Netflix is the world’s leading internet subscription service, which enables members watch unlimited movies and TV shows for a monthly fee of $8.0 (around Rs 355). TATA group seems to have run into an issue of shortage of spectrum in yet another venture beyond its telecom flagship Tata Teleservices.
