DD Direct’s free broadcast is biggest challenge
DTH service provider Tata Sky’s MD and CEO Harit Nagpal’s career started as an export manager in erstwhile Lakme, and later at Pepsi. He was group marketing director at Vodafone Essar before joining Tata Sky. In the past ten years, he has seen the exponential growth of mobile subscribers backed by a continuous drop in call charges, before he moved to the DTH space in Aug 2010. In over a year, he revamped the operator’s customer service infrastructure and repackaged its products to make them more customer-friendly. Course correction, direct to consumer
Tata Sky is attempting to calibrate its offerings based on feedback, while telling the audience it is ‘premium’ only on offering, not price. Creating a certain perception about a category or brand is, arguably, easier than changing entrenched perceptions. The latter challenge for the DTH category, and itself in particular, is what Tata Sky has taken up — starting with the perception that it is ‘expensive’ and ‘inflexible’. And, like any services category, DTH is replete with challenges of customer dissatisfaction — proof of which is available in abundance on the Internet. The »»»
Feeding time in India’s DTH market
Consolidation in the Indian DTH market is inevitable, perhaps within months, according to Tata Sky Managing Director, Harit Nagpal. Speaking to an audience at NDS’ Perspectives series at IBC 2011, Mr Nagpal lamented what he called the high taxes levied against commercial DTH operators and the bandwidth restrictions he claims are strangling their ability to add channels and HD. With six commercial DTH platforms and the publicly funded Dordashan service, operators are competing in a market where 120 million homes are signed up to Pay TV, with nearly a million new subscribers per month. It’s a »»»

Tata Sky seeks a back-up satellite
Tata Sky has requested Isro controlled Antrix Corporation for permission to hire a spare satellite from an overseas provider, in the same orbital slot as the Insat 4A satellite it uses to beam signals to subscribers. The move follows the inability of the DTH firm, which is a three-way joint venture with Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, Singapore government controlled Temasek and the $67.4 billion Tata group to get insurance against the risk of satellite failure and attendant loss of profits. If it succeeds in its attempt, the direct to home broadcaster will become the first in the industry »»»
