Sun TV Network has launched three new pay channels from Monday — Sun Life, Sun TV RI (Rest of India) in Tamil and Gemini Life in Telugu.

Sun Life and Gemini Life will focus on areas like lifestyle, religion, health and education, the Chennai-based broadcaster said. Sun TV RI will transmit the same content that goes on air on its flagship Sun TV channel, but the broadcast will be specialized for all states other than Tamil Nadu, allowing advertisers to focus on specific geographical areas.

The company now has 32 TV channels, which includes 12 in Tamil, nine in Telugu, seven in Kannada and four channels in Malayalam languages, Sun TV said.

Sun TV has been quite aggressive in launching new channels and pushing new content recently. Last week it launched four advertisement free action movie channels in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. In December, it had launched four high definition TV channels, three in Tamil and one in Telugu.

Sun TV Network Ltd has launched four Ad free action movie channels – Sun Action in Tamil, Gemini Action in Telugu, Suriyan TV in Kannada and Surya Action in Malayalam on January 04, 2012.

With this launch the company has entered into the “Ad free” pay channel world and also the new genre of “Action Movie” has been added to its existing genres of General Entertainment, Movies, Music, News, Kids and Comedy.

These will be the first of its kind 24 hours Ad free Action Movie Channels in India and are premier pay channels.

With this launch, the number of channels under Sun’s bouquet moves up to 29 of which there are 10 channels in Tamil, 8 channels in Telugu, 7 channels in Kannada and 4 channels in Malayalam languages.

The Sun TV Network Ltd. stock was trading at Rs.284.90, down by Rs.3.45 or 1.20%. The stock hit an intraday high of Rs.286.50 and low of Rs.284.10.

Sun Direct adds four new channels from the Sun Network bouquet of channels on its platform. Presently the four channels are in scrambled mode. As these channels are not yet officially launched. Chennai, Dec. 10: Sun TV Network is set to launch four high definition (HD) channels in Tamil and Telugu languages today (December 11).

According to a press release, the company plans to launch Sun TV, KTV, Sun Music HD channels in Tamil and Gemini TV HD in Telugu.

These channels, the first of its kind in Tamil and Telugu, will first be offered on the DTH (direct to home) and digital cable platforms in India, and will progressively become available in global markets.

While Sun TV HD, KTV HD and Gemini TV HD are to be priced at Rs 40 a month, its Sun Music HD will be priced at Rs 25 a month. However, as a bouquet of four channels, it will cost Rs 100 per month.

In high definition, the density of picture elements will be five times that of standard definition, resulting in a sharper image. As of now, about a dozen HD channels are available in India across general entertainment, sports, news and movie genres.

NEW DELHI: After his alleged involvement in the 2G scam and leasing of telephone lines, former telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran’s ‘role’ in sanctioning of spectrum to Sun Direct is now being looked into by the CBI.

The agency had sought the files from Department of Telecom related to spectrum allocation made to direct-to-home (DTH) broadcasters by seeking details of sanction of bandwidth.

The decision to probe the DTH broadcasters was taken after agency sleuths found that some of the telecom companies, under probe in the 2G scam, were also broadcasters of the service, official sources said.

The files pertained to Dish TV India Limited, Reliance Big TV Pvt Limited, Bharti Multi-media Limited, Bharti Business Channel Pvt Limited, Doordarshan, SunDirect TV Pvt Limited and Tata Sky Limited.

However, barring Sun Direct, all other files were returned by the CBI to the authority and sources in the know said allocation of spectrum to the Tamil Nadu-based TV channel was being looked into.

The CBI recently registered a case against Maran, his brother Kalanithi and two others besides three companies for allegedly receiving favours during the DMK leader’s tenure as telecom minister.

Searches were carried out on October 10 at various places including residential premises of Maran, who resigned earlier this year as textiles minister.

The CBI has also registered a preliminary enquiry to probe into allegations of allocation of over 300 telephone lines to the residence of Maran in Chennai and illegally linking with a television channel owned by his brother.

These 323 residential lines were in the name of BSNL General Manager and connecting the Boat House residence of Maran with office of Sun TV through a dedicated underground cable during his tenure as telecom minister, CBI alleged.

The sources said these lines were not ordinary telephone lines but more costly ISDN, capable of carrying huge data thus facilitating faster transmission of TV news and programmes across the globe.

The CBI alleged that a stealth cable was used to connect the residence of the Minister with Sun TV office to give impression that these lines were for the Minister but actually they were used by the channel.

New Delhi: The Centre has moved the Supreme Court claiming that Sun Direct TV, a venture promoted by the Maran family, should pay an annual licence fee as per the licence agreement.

The issue pertains to the manner in which the “gross revenue” is to be calculated for the purpose of the annual licence fee from DTH licensees, including the South-based Sun TV group firm.

The DoT has challenged the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal’s (TDSAT) that had excluded income from non-licenced activities for the purpose of calculating licence fee.

According to the government, as the matter relating to adjusted gross revenue (AGR) is pending before the apex court, the channel is required to pay licence fee as per the licence agreement and not as per the tribunal’s decision.

Besides, the Centre being the licensor and having exclusive privilege to grant licence is entitled to obtain such a share in revenue earned by the licensees which would come within the purview of the definition of AGR contained in the licence, DoT said in its appeal.

A batch of petitions filed by DoT against various telecom service providers, including Cellular Operators Association of India, Bharati Cellular, Hutchinson, IDEA celluar, VSNL, Tata Teleservices and others, are pending before the apex court.

TDSAT had said that the direct-to-home (DTH) services operator is required to pay licence fee on the basis of AGR which should mean total revenue as reflected in the audited accounts from the operation of DTH as reduced by subscription fee charges passed on to the pay channel broadcasters, sale of hardware included integrated receiver decoder required for connectivity at the consumers’ premises and service/entertainment tax actually paid to the government if gross revenue had included them.
