NEW DELHI: The augmentation of the capacity of the country’s only free direct-to-home platform DD Direct Plus to 97 channels will cost Rs 554.3 million. The augmentation in the first phase will be completed on 31 March 2011. The plan is to increase DD Direct Plus’ capacity to 200 by the end of the financial year 2011-12. The platform currently has a capacity of 59 channels while it presently beams 57 TV channels, apart from 21 channels of All India Radio. The TV channels include 21 Doordarshan channels. Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting, Ambika Soni said that the phased expansion of DD DTH platform which proposed to increase free to air channels from 59 to 200 would offer a wide bouquet to the viewers. The digitalization of AIR and DD would enable remote and far flung regions to receive higher quality signals. There are 33 free-to-air TV channels and 12 AIR channels available throughout India, except Andaman and Nicobar Islands. NEW DELHI: The capacity of the country’s only free direct-to-home platform, DD Direct Plus, is expected to go up to 100 channels by 31 March 2011. According to Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni, the capacity will increase to 200 by 31 December 2011. The Minister was emphatic in an informal interaction with the media that DD Direct Plus will remain free-to-air. She also confirmed that DD Direct Plus will like other DTH players beam in high definition. New Delhi, June 26 (IANS) The government has cleared the incorporation of up to 100 channels in DD Direct Plus by March 31 next year and 200 channels by December 2011, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni Friday said.
