Videocon’s Dhoots look to snap up IOL Netcom

MUMBAI: The Dhoot family, the promoters of Videocon Group, has bought 14% equity in IOL Netcom, a Mumbai-based broadband company, from the open market. The transaction is being perceived by the industry as a take over bid. In the last two months, Shree Dhoot Trading & Agencies Ltd, an investment company of the Dhoots, has mopped up 11.72% shares in the loss-making firm, earlier known as IOL Broadband. Maran brothers, Azhagiri settle dispute before tribunal

NEW DELHI: Maran brothers and Mr M K Azhagiri, son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, warring over cable distribution in the State on Thursday settled their dispute before the broadcast tribunal. After the agreement, the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) directed the two camps to execute the agreement for supply of signals of Sun TV to Azhagiri-owned Royal Cable Vision (RCV) within three days. The TDSAT Bench headed by Justice Mr Arun Kumar also directed that after the agreement, Channel Plus, a unit of Sun TV Network, would activate the signals of Sun TV within 24 hours. “Let »»»

Tata Sky plans tie-ups with Sony Pictures, Fox for content

In the backdrop of intensifying battle in the direct-to-home (DTH) space, Tata Sky’s plans to stay on the top with tieups. The partners include global entertainment majors such as Sony Pictures and Fox for content as varied as movies and coverage of special events which will constitute the key to the expansion of its ‘pay per view’ portfolio. Dish TV plans to open franchise model shops

Dish TV India, the Essel group promoted direct-to-home (DTH) service provider, is planning to open a number of shops on a franchise model across the country. Navid Rashid, deputy vice-president, Dish TV India, says that the DTH major is going to increase the existing number of shops from 800 to 2,000 by the end of this fiscal. “We are making franchisees across the country to reduce the turn around time from 24 hours to 6 hours for installation and make after-sale service available at a phone call. Cable operators opt out of Arasu Cable TV

Launched with huge fanfare here on July 15, the Arasu Cable TV Corporation control room has flopped as it has been unable to provide popular pay-channels and local channels belonging to the Sun TV group. This has resulted in only 17 local cable TV operators (LCOs) out of 212 LCOs who had given letters of intent (LOI), opting for signals directly from the corporation in Thanjavur town. In the nieghbouring Tiruchy district the situation is even worse with all the 380 LCOs, who had given LOI, continuing to source their signals from private MSOs and not Arasu. Dish TV to add 2 million subscribers in FY09

Dish TV has announced its first quarter numbers. It has posted net loss of Rs 125 crore for the quarter ended June 2008 as against loss of Rs 115 crore in previous quarter. Jawahar Goel, MD, Dish TV, said this year they are going to add two million subscribers. The business expects to be in the black by Q2 of the next financial year. Goel expects an an increase of equity and Rs 1,140 crore from the rights issue in the coming period.
